Abstract
In the design of the soil nailing method in the Japanese road sector, the reduction factor of the slope protection work, µ value, according to the type and shape of the slope, is used. However, µ value was proposed for ‘rigid type' slope protection such as shotcrete at the time. Therefore, whether it can be evaluated from the same perspective for current slopes made of various materials and shapes is unknown. In this study, previous experiments for calculating the reduction factor µ value are reviewed at the first step. As a result, various experiments were used, however, there were no unified rules for displacements. In the next step, centrifuge model tests were conducted using oblique loading from the top of a slope, which is used to confirm the reinforcement effect of the soil nailing method. In the scope of this study, it is found that the µ value is overestimated due to the bending of the reinforcement during large deformations and that the effect of facing on slope stability is different for the same µ value.
