Abstract

Pressurized piping systems used in nuclear power plants are supposed to be degraded by aging effects, and degradations like stress corrosion cracks or wall thinning are considered to be caused in such piping systems. In order to clarify the behavior of degraded pipes under seismic events, a research program was conducted from 1996 to 2000. In this program, cyclic four-point bending tests on straight pipes and shaking table tests using piping system models were conducted. Cyclic bending tests were conducted on straight pipes to investigate the relation between the failure mod and degradation condition. Shaking table tests were conducted to investigate the influence of degradation on piping system behavior and clarify the failure mode of degraded piping systems. Through these tests, the failure modes of aged piping were obtained under varying loading and degradation conditions. This paper describes the overview of the research program and the brief results of the experiments.
