Abstract
When constructing a tower building, a tower crane is used. The tower crane is a temporary structure, but large damage may be given to the circumference when it collapses due to the earthquake. For the stability of the tower crane, the bearing capacity of the pile foundation is very important. However, there is no clear regulation on the pile foundation in the design criterion. Especially, for the dynamic characteristics of the structure with pile foundation, the ground and the foundation are very important. In this paper, the dynamic response of the self-supporting tower crane with pile foundation was analyzed by the dynamic centrifuge model tests. The results of the tests showed that the dynamic behavior of a tower crane was influenced by the degradation of the ground rigidity. Furthermore, the gap between the pile head and surrounding surface ground was very important. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group.
