抄録

A change of the chemical composition of cosmic rays from a predominantly heavy one to a predominatly light one at around 10(17.5)eV similar to 10(18.5)eV was claimed by the Fly's Eye group. This possibility was examined by the experiments at Akeno. The relation between the muon density (rho(mu)(600)) and the charged particle density on the ground (S(600)) at 600m from the core is investigated between 10(16.5)eV and 10(19)eV using the Akeno 1km(2), 20km(2) and 100km(2) air shower arrays. The experimental result was compared with that expected from the simulation under the two component hypothesis from the Fly's Eye experiment. The change of the composition above 10(17.5)eV has not been detected beyond the experimental uncertainties and assumptions used in the simulation.
